How to Turn A Lantern into a Light Fixture

How to Turn A Lantern into a Light Fixture
We recently bought our first home, and we love it. Unfortunately, the home hasn't really been updated since the 80's. It has great bones; it just needs a lot of inside cosmetic work. We are slowly updating where we can, and I'll share any inexpensive DIYs with you along the way. Today I'm going to share a light fixture update that's inexpensive and easy. I forgot to take before pictures (I took before pictures of every other upstairs room), so just imagine a hallway that has 80's gold globe lights, gold door hardware, white walls, and baseboards that are basically old barnwood 2x4's. Wood dust would fall off every time you touched it.
We took out the baseboards and installed stained baseboards. We used Bombay Mahogany polyshades* in gloss. I know this is unconventional, but we have stained window frames that I love and we are matching the baseboards in the main living areas with the pretty window frames. We also ordered this runner and this runner for the hallway to dampen sound. We switched all the door hardware to silver.
Then I had to decide on light fixtures. I searched pinterest for at least a month trying to decide what I wanted. We are going with a mix of coastal and farmhouse, so I wanted something like a woven basket or something wood. I really love the look of this wooden lantern pendant* and the shape of this lantern pendant*, but I didn't like the price tag of either. I would probably have considered it if I only needed one light, but our hallway has two light fixtures. I decided to create my own light fixture.

I started searching for lanterns that I could turn into a light fixture. I looked at HomeGoods, Michaels, Joanns, TJ Maxx, Ross, Amazon, Walmart, and Target to find a lantern I would like. It had to be a certain height to fit above the doors and I really wanted to to be wood. After lots of searching I found this beautiful wood lantern*.

SUPPLIES
Lantern* (this gold geometric lantern* and this rectangle wood lantern* would be really cool light fixtures)
Tools
mini pendant kits* (I ordered silver to match our door hardware, but there's also an  oil-rubbed bronze mini pendant* and white mini pendant*)

INSTRUCTIONS
How to Turn A Lantern into a Light Fixture
1. When it arrived I had to do a bit of deconstruction. First, I took off the handle.

2. I took off the bottom and the no-skid feet.

3. I took out the glass and the little metal glass holders. I took out the glass because I was worried about the weight. It probably would've been okay if I left the glass in.
4. I also made it harder on myself and spray painted the top silver and sanded and stained the wood to match the baseboards.
5. I took the top metal piece off of the mini pendant and slid the lantern onto the cord. The size of the metal dome above the lightbulb was the perfect size to hold the lantern. If your lantern is larger you would need to add some extra hardware to hold the lantern in place.

6. Install the light with the instructions of the light. Be careful when you are switching the wires!
Then you have beautiful lantern lights to enjoy!
