Climb Every Mountain Mini Quilt

I grew up right next to the rocky mountains, so they hold a special place in my heart. I love seeing them change for each season and feel a little lost when I'm somewhere else and can't see any mountains. When I first saw this "SnowCapped" fabric at My Fabric Designs I immediately fell in love. I love the mountains and love how it could play so well in a kids' room or playroom. I ordered a fat quarter not knowing what I would do with it. When it came I still loved it, but it sat around for awhile because I couldn't decide what to do with it. Eventually, I decided on a mini quilt that could cover our fuse box which is in the corner of our dining area. Once we move I'll use it to decorate a boy's room or a playroom, but it works in our kitchen for now. It's just shy of being tall enough to fully cover the fuse box, but it's close enough.

The quilt hangs between our art hanging string and the height board. The colors go with our brown cabinets and our brown height board.
Besides quilting and binding the quilt, I added a little bit of embroidery that says "climb every mountain" which is from the movie The Sound of Music. Besides being an awesome movie, it has some meaning to my family since my grandparents lived in Germany about the same time the movie takes place. The phrase "climb every mountain" inspires me, and I hope it will inspire my kids when they learn to read. It's really small so you have to get close to see it.

I used one fat quarter for this quilt. I cut it in half lengthwise and used one for the front and one for the back. I used some white dotted fabric from my scraps for the binding. Instead of quilting all the way across, I decided to outline some of the mountains and do a couple of horizontal lines. I love how the outlines really make the mountains pop off the fabric.

One of my favorite parts is the "snowcaps" I added to some of the letters in "mountain". I think it looks so cool and it wasn't a lot of extra time to embroider it.
You can also see a close up of the pocket corners to hold a dowel. It's a great and easy way to make it so your quilt can be hung on the wall. I just tied a string around the dowel and hung it on a nail for now. If I rest the dowel on the nail, then it's too high and shows the fuse box below.
