Feathers Flights // Sewing Blog: Whale Spray Sweatshirt

Whale Spray Sweatshirt

I think I've finally pinpointed my personal style. I've always struggled with wanting to be sporty and feminine. I love dressing preppy and sporty, but then I feel a little too casual. I also love dressing soft and feminine, but then I feel too dressed up. Since I make my own clothing, I can do a mash-up of sporty and feminine! The sporty side of this top is that it's a raglan sleeve sweatshirt. The feminine side of this sweatshirt is the scallop details, whale spray polka dots, and touch of embroidery.
I first cut out all the pieces and then fabric printed the whale and dots of spray. Then I sewed it all together and added the scallops to the raglan line. I added some gray double topstitching on all the ribbed edges. Lastly, I added some hand embroidery to highlight the whale.
I think it's the perfect collaboration, and I love it! Did you have a hard time finding your style? Do you doing any style mash-ups? I'd love to hear!

  1. Way cute. And a fun little applique.
I am still trying to figure out my style. I am so lazy, I bought 5 white v-neck shirts when I found them for $1 a piece and I wear them all the time. It is hard to try to dress nice, without breaking the bank, or wearing something the kids will get dirty.
I know everyone raves over skinny jeans, but I cannot wrap my head around them, or wrap them around my body. So not flattering on me. Which just makes everything harder, or at least that is how it seems to me.
I can't wait to see what you do with more of your style.

  2. My style is jeans!!! I vary the style of tops/blouses depending on where I'm going. It's so easy to dress jeans up and down. I'm loving skinny jeans at the moment, but will go to boot leg once it cools down. Your top looks fabulous with the whale and spray!!! Did you paint them by hand or using a stencil?

  3. What a cute sweatshirt. You've added so many cool details, it must have been a lot of fun to make.
