I needed a quick refashion to update a maternity shirt a friend gave me. It was cute and summery, but I wanted to add long sleeves for winter. I decided to refashion the neckline with a fun bow detail. This is on a maternity shirt, but the tutorial can be used for any shirt neckline.

1. Cut neckline off of shirt and measure length, or with a partly sewn shirt use the pattern’s recommendation for length.

2. Use length measurement to cut out a neckband. On the short end you cut use the regular height (mine was 2″ which makes a 3/4″ finished height neckband.) and on the folded end double the height (4″).
3. Cut a tab for the center of the bow. Mine was 2″x2″ which produced a tab 3/4″x3/4″. I did a contrast purple that matched the long sleeves.

4. Sew the short end of the ribbing together with right sides together.
5. With right sides together sew two sides together of the tab.
6. Fold the neckband in half longways with wrong sides together.

7. At the widest point (center) fold the tab around the neckband matching the raw edges. Bunch up the neckband so it looks like a bow.
8. Baste the edges together at the tab.

9. Pin the neckband onto the shirt. Place the bow at either center front or to the side like I did.
10. Stretch while sewing with a zigzag stitch.
11. Iron the seam allowance down towards the shirt.

It’s a super quick refashion that makes a cute little statement! I’m so happy with how it turned out, and it gives the perfect little feminine touch to a simple tee!
