Feathers Flights // Sewing Blog: Awesome Ugly Sweater

Awesome Ugly Sweater

A couple weeks ago while I was thrifting I came across this ugly but amazing knitted sweater. At first I thought about making something for Henry with it, but that quickly changed because I wanted to keep it all to myself. I just love the scene on the front. It makes me think of my German heritage. And it's 100% wool!
I thought it was ugly, but I couldn't stop looking at it. Into the cart it went. It was too big, so I measured and took it in.
I was nervous about sewing on such a big yarn, so I did two zigzags right next to each other and then serged it. I hope this will keep it from unraveling at all.
The hemline isn't straight, it's longer in the front than it is in the back, so I was going to turn it into a hi-lo hem. Then I realized that the longer hem is perfect for maternity, so for now I'm going to keep it how it is. I think eventually, maybe next winter, I'll straighten out the hem.

  1. Maybe you could have used bias tape to keep the seam from raveling?!

  2. Love it! Makes you stand out in the crowd.

  3. Cute! In seam pockets would be awesome on this sweater too!

  4. Your upcycle of this is fabulous! I also love that the patterned scene doesn't have a straight top edge but that it's shaped. It goes really well with the dark background. Bless the person who knit this. Do you think it might have been a present that wasn't as appreciated as the giver hoped? I think it is wonderful that you picked it up and made it into a sweater you'll wear. Well done all round!
