Hello! My name is Michelle and I share projects at Handmade Martini. I'm so thrilled to be with you today!
Halloween is a special time for me, mostly because my mom and I collaborate on the kids' costumes. We haven't lived near each other since I graduated high school, but we don't let that stop us from creating together!
My mom's nickname is The Costume Queen. She loves making costumes, she says, because they don't have to be perfect and can be put together with hot glue, staples, and a bit of thread. While I enjoy the tiniest details of sewing, she abhors ripping seams and making sure stitching is perfectly straight. What she lacks in patience she makes up for in creativity.
Here are two costumes she created for my sister back in the day.
Who would think to make a three-year-old boy into Elvis? Or a two-year-old boy into an Organ Grinder's Monkey? (And who would think those boys would actually put the costumes on?)

Now that the kids are old enough to have opinions (!!), we start with what's interesting them. Then we try to think of a way to make it fun, unusual, and unexpected.
Our most popular collaboration so far was last year's pirate/parrot ensemble. The boys loved everything pirate, so I came up with the idea to make Eliza their parrot. Mom bought the boys' costumes and made Eliza's from feather boas and felt.
My hope is to continue finding a way to coordinate all three of their costumes as long as they'll let me, to continue creating awesome things with my mom, to continue coming up with unexpectedly fun ensembles, and maybe to inspire others along the way!
Thanks for having me, Heather! Happy Handmade Halloween, everyone!
