Learn How to Gather.

  1. Ok, for those of us who sew with no training whatsoever and aren't even sure of the right questions to ask- what's the purpose of the ratios? Why do you need different ratios? Does it matter if your gathers are grainline, crosswise, or bias?
I just got my new sewing machine on Black Friday, and it has a gathering foot- is that what you use? How do you "set" the ratio?
Thanks for putting up with inexperienced me!

    1. Lynness, the ratios above refer to the widths of your two fabrics; the waistband and the skirt, for example. A ratio of 3:1 means that your skirt width is three times the length of your waistband width. You then gather up the skirt piece until it's width matches the width of the waistband. A ratio of 3:1 will give you a very full skirt with lots of gathers.

    2. I don't use a gathering foot and don't know how to use one. This is how I gather http://www.feathersflights.com/2011/03/how-to-gather.html.
