Sewing 101 - Q&A

I have made many, many mistakes since I first began to sew. I'v had a hard time reading patterns and instructions. I've used the wrong kind of fabric and made some terrible fitting mistakes. Well, I want to share want I've learned so that you don't make the same mistakes. From now on I'm going to be a lot more open with my sewing knowledge. To do this I need help from you! What are your sewing questions or sewing problems? Any question remotely related to fabric or sewing, and I will do my best to answer or open it up so readers can answer. It can even be an question wanting to copy something. I'll direct you to a pattern or tutorial to help you make it.

  • How to install a zipper?
  • How to mend a hole?
  • What does understitch mean?
  • Why do I clip, notch, and/or grade?
  • Wonder about a step in your pattern's directions?
  • How to figure if a pattern will fit you?
Send them to me at feathersflights(at)gmail(dot)com, and I'll post once a week with the answer! I'm really excited to start this!

  1. I'm quite excited about this. I love to sew but have never tried anything rotely advanced because I'm afraid I'll screw up. Zippers are on my list to learn.

  2. Love this idea...how about what types of needles to use with different fabrics. Also, I don't have a serger, and I get really nervous about things that are serged...can I still make them?
