Feathers Flights // Sewing Blog: Thank You Uncle Sam

Thank You Uncle Sam

How was your weekend? Good and relaxing I hope. This weekend my friend came to me about starting a modest swimsuit line. Business totally freaks me out (I'm just not the businesswoman type), so instead I told her I'd make the patterns and the prototypes. That's the part I like anyway. She drew up the designs and I'm trying to make them real. I'm really excited and know it will help me grow. My pattern-making skills and swimsuit sewing skills could use some good fine-tuning. Once she gets her line up and going, I'll let you know where you can see them. Because I'm going to be working full-time plus this contract work on the side, I won't have as much time to blog here. I'm going to keep working on the sewing basics though because they are quick. I really hope they are making sense and helping minimize the fear of sewing.
Anyway, some other good news is that my husband surprised me with a serger this weekend! I was so surprised. I had told him I wanted one thinking it would be years before we could consider it. We just happened to get more back from our tax return than we planned. Thank you Uncle Sam!
My husband got an inexpensive one because that's all I wanted, and it had really good reviews. I haven't actually had time to use it yet because my husband set it up for me Friday morning without me knowing. When I got home from work I had so many other things to do that I didn't walk into the sewing room until my husband asked me to get something in there. Then Saturday I spend the time reading the manual and watching the CD's and working on the swimsuit designs. I hope to use it tomorrow.
My two sewing friends look so happy next to each other.
I hope everyone has a great week!

  1. Ah! A serger! Lucky! That definitely speeds up the sewing process. I may have to 'drop in' and give it a whirl sometime!

  2. Congrats! What a thoughtful husband! I will miss your blogging, BUT you will be great at the swim suit gig! The world needs MORE cute & modest stuff out there! Good Luck! ...it would be great if you 'documented' the step by steps of designing. I don't know, maybe that would give 'trade secrets' away? OK, don't mind me, I'm just being selfish and want you to continue this great blog! :)

  3. Hooray for sergers and husbands and tax returns (though not necessarily in that order)! I still need one. Good luck with the swimsuit line. You'll do great!

  5. It's like you have a new child! Congrats! and I'm with you on any new business talk--the first mention of a business idea scares me to death. But that's awesome you're working on it in your own way.

  7. I just bought the very same one, and it is sitting next to my Bernina as well :) for some reason I'm terrified to use it. I watched the cd several times, and I think I have it, but I don't know why I'm still paralyzed in fear of firing it up. Have you used it yet? I think I may cheat and do the knot thing, to run the new threads through.

Nice to stumble onto a fun sewing blog like yours.
