Feathers Flights // Sewing Blog: Rug Strengthening

Rug Strengthening

I have this beautiful rug that I've had for a couple of years. Unfortunately, the tag says, "Spot clean only." How do you not wash a rug? It gets too dirty. The rug is delicate because of all of the loops on the top. Because I love the rug so much, I decided to sew it to strengthen it.

I sewed down each line of loops flattening them and attaching them to something. I used an industrial machine at work because it's so much stronger and faster.

It took me about 5 straight hours of constant sewing, countless bobbins (I stopped caring about the bobbin color), and bending/breaking 4 size 18 needles. It was pretty intense.

I think it actually looks better with the loops flattened. The sewed ones are on the right, unsewed on the left.
Now I can keep using my rug, loving it, and washing it! We are moving in three weeks from the place we are house-sitting back to an apartment. Once we move, I'll show you the whole rug and the other decorations I come up with.

  1. Wow! That was quite a job, but it seems worth it, for sure.
Can't wait to see the whole rug. I am planning on making one next month.

  2. great tip! What a hard job but worth it when you love something so special, I have a quilt that is tearing apart..I'd love to put it back together but I don't know how to...any ideas? Some on the patches are torn and the filling is coming out. It's a very old quilt. Anyways you did a fantastic job!

  3. Wow, that is some hardcore sewing! Great job, what a resourceful way to keep using something you love. I'll keep that tip in mind.

  4. You did a great job. That's such a beautiful rug and I can see why you'd love to preserve it.

I found your blog from a comment you left on Modesty is Pretty's blog!
